Acllaimed Author Steve Alten’s latest MEG series book titled Hell’s Aquarium is out now. The above is a trailer for said book, I should be getting my paperback tomorrow (or later today) since I’ll have a bit of money. Having already read the hard back I can tell you it’s the most kickass of the series.
Also in the latest Update on the MEG MOVIE Steve via e-mail he let his fans know that they’re watching book sales numbers for the paper back release. He also said that they’re close to making a deal which could be impacted by said book sales.
I want a MEG movie, I want a movie about a Megalodon done with a big budget and done right. Let’s kick start this bitch, cause movie fans are gonna need a bigger boat.

This really didn’t say anything about a potential movie. There probably will not be one.
That’s because things are reaching a critical juncture in the planning and preperation of the film. Sales and therefore cash is what makes some production companies and studios make a film…especially one based on a book (series).
As much as that is unfortunate it makes good business sense. But Steve sounds very hopeful and if you can’t trust the Author/Screenwriter who can you trust.
“That’s because things are reaching a critical juncture in the planning and preperation of the film. Sales and therefore cash is what makes some production companies and studios make a film…especially one based on a book (series).”
Uh-huh, sure, a “critical juncture”–one can argue that this has been at a “critical juncture” for a long time. However, more than book sales, the story has to be good or, at least, inspire a film story. With the books, that is a huge problem.
“As much as that is unfortunate it makes good business sense.”
This has been the bait that Alten has been using for a long time with hopeful filmgoers with nothing else to go on. It has alienated more people more than kept them inspired. His line, “keep the faith,” has not worked.
“But Steve sounds very hopeful and if you can’t trust the Author/Screenwriter who can you trust.”
Who can trust Alten when he baits people with one-liners that have no information but offers hope if book sales are appealing? One would think that a good story would be enough (sometimes, it is), not book sales. Book sales do not make a story good.
without knowing what the studios are honestly thinking, i have high doubts that they would be willing to take a chance. aside from the fact that the author is a proven first rate writer, who does every ounce of research possible, they still will only look to the all out numbers.
but then this is still hollywood that made movies like mario brothers and jaws 3d, and jaws 4. i know of countless stinkers out there, but i am absolutely certain that if steve has anything to do with the script, and filming, i know for a fact that this would become a true cult classic for diehards like myself.
i know a great many people that want to see a decent ocean movie once again, especially since it has been some 31 years since the last decent one was released(i.e. jaws 2).
I agree with the entirety of your response. Steve has been working hard, not to mention seemingly endlessly with various studios to get Meg made.
With such determination it’s only a matter of time before he succeeds as far as I’m concerned.
“aside from the fact that the author is a proven first rate writer, who does every ounce of research possible, they still will only look to the all out numbers.”
This is only true if someone is on crack. There is nothing factual about that statement, and the books are the evidence to refute it. To say Alten is “a proven first rate writer” is an insult to everyone who bothers to proofread their work before turning in a final draft. These books are cliched, generic, and sad to read through. That says nothing about the author personally but plenty about the writing. The best book was the first one, and that is not saying much really.
What research has he done that fits “every ounce of research possible”? I doubt he did “every ounce” he could. Clearly, he did not research shark behavior–unless you count watching Jaws as research. What constitutes research here is debatable.
To claim that “they still will only look to the all out numbers” misses the point that the stories in the books are horrible. If any movie (if there ever is one) looks like the books, it will be just as bad. Yes, film studios did pay for movies as the ones you stated but also plenty of stellar films. If anyone is interested in “a decent ocean movie once again,” Alten should stay out of it. While I do think a movie adapted fro the first book could work really well, it needs to be very different and challenge a lot about the shark genre.
Dee, I might could listen to your opinion except you sound so incredibly hateful toward Steve Alten. If you don’t like him or his books, fine but why try to ruin it for the rest of us who do love his books and hope there is a movie? It really seems like your time could be better served by giving opinions on authors and books that you do like. However, judging from your tone I am guessing that you may be one of those people who rarely has anything positive to say.
That being said, I love the Meg series. I liked some better than others but did enjoy them all. Luckily I also have the ability to enjoy works of high literary esteem as well as books that may just be a good, fun read. I don’t expect every single book I read to meet some sort of highbrow benchmark. I read the Meg series as well as The Loch over and over. They have become my “fuzzy blanket” books. I am always reading a book and sometimes after a rough day I turn to one of my “fuzzy blanket” books. Those are just plain fun to read books! I’ve actually read some of them so much that I’ve had to buy replacements. I am also a die hard fan of sci fi monster movies so I hope they do make a Meg movie. I have no idea why they’ve been hesitating for so long; there is definitely a large fan base out there just waiting!
wow! it sounds to me like u r just a hater of anything that requires work and imagination. These books would seem dumb to a dusty woman like u who probably sits at home reading romance novels playing checkers by herself. If these movies are made well they will inspire several movies to come. “jaws meets Jurassic Park”. The bottom line is no matter how shitty it is i’m still gonna go see it and it will be better than anything your ass could’ve made. So quit hatin’ and stick to checkers u goddamn hater. Stick to the star wars blogs. Peace Out to the other meg fans. “represent”.
I’m approving this comment for it’s support of the Meg series but I don’t support the language used in it.
I know even to me this language is stuff I would have said without blinking but not anymore.
Anyhoo Go Steve Alten!
Thanks Jonas for your comment.

I can’t begin to understand dees comments. Seems she doesn’t even know first thing bout shark behaviour, prob only thing she seen or read bout sharks was jaws. This series was really good and well written. The stories itslef plays into a movie setting so I don’t even know why nobody made it yet, especially since shark night 3d is coming out (yeah really good moovie there). I hope they make the movie and make it like the book
lol I’m all for a good meg movie, though Jaws based on his size when he eats Robert Shaw (aka Sam Quint) towards the end is pretty close to what a meg would be in size, also the tooth that Richard Dreyfuss (aka Matt Hooper) pulls out of the fishing boat is pretty close to the size of a Megs tooth. Just saying Jaws might give ya the meg fix ya need to hold ya over until they come out with a big budget Meg movie. Just a Fair warning it could end up being like “Deep Blue”. With a bunch of fancy special effects a bunch of the story cut out and some crappy one liners………lots of budget shitty film…..
